Benjamin Verhoeven (born 1990, Belgium) is a visual artist based in Brussels.
In 2013, he obtained his Master of Fine Arts from KASK & Conservatorium - School of Arts Ghent and has been a laureate at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) since 2015. He currently teaches as a visiting lecturer at KASK & Conservatorium - School of Arts Ghent.
Verhoeven's practice focuses on the image as a medium and its modes of (re)production, using audiovisual apparatuses as primary tools. His work isolates image-making processes by slowing them down and dissecting the technical operations through which images are produced.
In the ongoing project Scanning Cinema, he scans moving images and reintegrates them into stop-motion video works, using a flatbed scanner to re-register montage, camera movement and narration into what he refers to as a “Scanned Reality.”
Verhoeven has participated in various national and international exhibitions, including at KANAL, Mu.ZEE, Extra City and Cinematek (Belgium), the University Art Gallery Irvine (USA), the 6th Moscow Biennale (Russia) and Bienalsur (Argentina).
His video work has been presented at film festivals such as Experiments in Cinema (USA), Traverse Vidéo (France), Stuttgarter Filmwinter (Germany), the European Media Art Festival (Germany), Videoformes (France) and Limited Access Festival (Iran).
Since 2021, Verhoeven has been developing a joint artistic practice with Amine Lahrach (1995, Morocco), working between Brussels and Marrakesh. Coming from different cultural and geographical contexts, they use the camera as a shared tool for dialogue and exchange.
Their collaborative work addresses questions of identity, cultural transmission, intercultural imagery and revolves around the notion of l’image commun, an image without singular authorship or fixed identity, capable of existing in multiple places simultaneously.
Their collaborations have been presented at Lichtekooi Artspace and Kunsthal Extra City (Belgium), as well as at the 1-54 Art Fair and Malhoun Artspace (Morocco).
